I am simply calling this piece shape “106” here is the story. This is my rendition of the first Dunhill I ever purchased. It was early in my pipe buying days, probably 1986 or so. I was just getting into high grade pipes and I saw this pipe at my local smoke shop. I really did not even know what a Dunhill was but I knew it was expensive and the owner said they were great pipes. I started to ask questions and slowly fell in love with this piece. It is nothing special, just a cool classic shape with a nothing blast, but I was falling for it. It was in the shop for a long time and every time I went in I would fondle it. Then I got the courage to ask if he took lay-away. BINGO my first high grade acquisition was unfolding. This was a fortune for a pipe in my days and I really did not know much about pipes but I knew I had to have it. I was not even thinking about making pipes at that time but I was starting to do silverwork on pipes. So I did purchase it and I have kept it ever since, my first Dunhill, shape 4106 year-1985. First thing I did was to add a silver band and I was the proud owner of my first Dunhill. Most of all my Dunhill’s have since parted but I have always held on to this one. As I started making pipes, this one always drew me to the simple, classic lines. I knew one day I had to make one. So here it is, my first piece I am simple calling “106” I know Dunhill calls this a Pot but on my piece the outside walls are slightly tapered to almost a Dublin shape. I did try my best to capture the essence of this piece while at the same time tried not to “cookie Cutter” the piece. I love the shape and I am very happy with the results. It is probably at least a Gp. 5 in size and you can compare it to the original in the background in the right view. The Dunhill is NOT included in this sale. I have always loved many of the Dunhill shapes and I still find myself looking at the classic Dunhill’s for inspiration. The great thing about this shape is it will lend itself to some of my oldest aged briar. I am very excited about that. Much of my old wood will not lend itself to my shapes today. So this is very exciting for me because some of this old wood is outstanding grain and I do hope to get some smooth pieces in the future. Now for this pipe….The blast came out wonderful and the smooth top in very beautiful. The Chamber is not my traditional Dublin chamber; it is more of a billiard chamber with a conical bottom. It is very comfortable in both the mouth and hand. This is my FIRST “106” and a very special piece to me. I really should keep it but I cannot make a living smoking pipes! So here it is, my first “106” and it has a NO.1 on the nomenclature panel and also noted on the inspection card. Hand cut traditional Cumberland mouthpiece w/Delrin tennon, hand made solid sterling silver “Rope” fitment. Thank you very much for looking.
